The Department Chair Meeting
The Department Chair Meeting

You are welcomed into the meeting by all three department chairs. As you sit down, you are immediately calm as the three make small talk with you and pour you a cup of coffee.

They then begin explaining more about the context surrounding the tension amongst English teaching faculty in the three high schools. Essentially, most teachers have been teaching for between 10 and 30 years and have developed respected niches within the schools and district based on their personal interests and passions. Students in this suburban district perform well on state mandated testing, as district scores fall in the 90th percentile. Many teachers are voicing the old phrases: "It it isn't broken, why fix it?" and "This is just one more reform fad that will come and go."

As you continue to discuss the standards and implementation, you wonder if teachers could see an actual curriculum map that incorporates the ELA CCSS, they'd have a starting point from which to begin thinking about the standards in a tangible manner.

The department chairs agree with your rationale and direct you to this website to examine their current curriculum map for 10th grade: http://www.sausd.us/cms/lib5/CA01000471/Centricity/Domain/5397/2015-16%20ELA%20Grade%2010%20Final%20Curriculum%20Map.pdf

For the purpose of this task, they ask that you only closely examine unit 6 and 7, Drama, Research Paper, and novel. After looking over the curriculum guide, you decide it will be best to work through a these units with your teaching friends.
