In the Teachers' Lounge, you are grateful for the opportunity to engage in follow-up discussions about practice and theoretical frameworks with the teachers you observed.
One teacher, Penny Kittle, invites you to talk to her students about the innovative approach she takes to curriculum.
Before visiting her class use the prompts below to reflect on where you stand with your own teaching framework and philosophy.
1. Which of the frameworks/curriculum models in Chapter 2-- cultural knowledge, literary and rhetorical forms, literacy skills/processes, and/or critical inquiry--have you seen at play as both a student observing in classrooms and as a teacher? What kinds of activities reflected a teacher's adherence to a certain framework? Which seem to most engage students? Why do you think this is so?
2. Which of the framework(s) appeal to you and how do you think they will influence your approach?
4. Why is it important to know about different frameworks? What advantages does this knowledge give you over teachers who don't know about different approaches?
Now, head to your visit with Penny Kittle's students, to learn more about how her beliefs influence her teaching.
