Deptford Road

The first leg of the journey towards Canterbury takes the pilgrims along a four-mile stretch of dusty, well-traveled suburban roadway. There is always a great deal of traffic of all sorts on the Deptford Road because it connects the great city of London with one of the kingdom's principal naval and commercial seaports at Greenwich Reach. In the distance you can see the masts of ships and the span of Deptford Bridge.
