This man is dressed all in clothing that was once black but has faded with too much washing. His hands are callused, and in some places scarred, and his face is strangely flushed along one side as from sunburn. However, this discoloration is unnatural for, when he becomes very angry the unaffected side pales almost white creating a peculiar motley effect.

The Yeoman is a fellow who has seen much disappointment in life, but when he speaks of his former profession it is with the animation of one whose obsession with discovery has not completely died away.
