The musical heritage of Ireland is one of its richest cultural contributions, and this tradition is foregrounded throughout the novel in many ways, chiefly through Glorvina's prowess on the harp. In addition, other famous harpists like Carolan and Dennis Hampson are referenced significantly, and the mythic bard Ossian plays a central role, particularly through the debate over Macpherson's 'Ossian' poetry.
(The tune playing in the background is Feaghan Ghleas & Scott's "Lamentation of Youth" played traditionally on a replica of the Downhill harp from Ann Heymann's album Queen of Harps.)
