Rising unnaturally from the flat landscape, a funeral barrow captures your attention. In the early Anglo-Saxon period, these burial mounds marked the funeral sites of significant people. These individuals were often buried with luxury items-- including weapons, shields, coins, bowls, and other objects that might denote their ranks or deeds in life.
Have a look inside the barrow to discover what items may have belonged to Anglo-Saxon royalty.
The most famous Anglo-Saxon burial site is actually a collection of mounds at Sutton Hoo. Here, a rich and fascinating hoard was discovered buried in what was once a great longboat. Interestingly, no body was recovered-- the tomb was either a cenotaph or the human remains did not survive in that environment.
