In the 19th century the main source of income in Puerto Ricos economy came from agriculture with its main crop being sugar cane. In the 1940s the main contributor to the economy switched from agriculture to manufacturing due to U.S. tax incentives. Puerto Rico is subject to U.S. trade laws and restrictions. Tourism is a large part of the Puerto Rican economy today. As for the individual Puerto Rican, the average GDP is currently $17,700 a year.
