The Puerto Rican government is set up much like that of the U.S. Republican System. It consists of 3 branches, an Executive branch headed by a governor, Legislative and Judicial branches. Puerto Ricans do not pay federal income tax but the do pay Social Security and medicare taxes. Puerto Rico is now known as being a Common Wealth to the U.S. There have been many times in the past century that the idea of Puerto Rican becoming the 51st state has come up.
