Schofield Barracks
Schofield Barracks

When Jack Lovett encountered Inez Victor at Schofield Barracks on her date with Bobby (Robert) Strudler (88), and when Inez had Jack buried at Schofield more than two decades later (221), the Barracks were accessible only via a rough, narrow gravel road. The trip from Honolulu sometimes took several hours.

Consider these two story points in the text, the date and the burial. What sort of narrative do they frame? Is Inez correct when she says that she and Jack "were together all of [their] lives. If you count thinking about it" (229)?

Commissioned in 1909 and still an active Army base today, Schofield Barracks is now linked to the city by a freeway, and the trip can be made in 20 minutes when traffic is light.

When you return to "Hawai'i--Crossroads of the Pacific," make note of the palm trees at the center of O'ahu on the map. They're located at approximately the site of Schofield Barracks on the island.
