Trafalgar Square
The largest public square in central London, Trafalgar Square is a popular meeting place and location for political rallies. Built between 1827 and 1835, its name commemorates Britain’s famed naval victory against France in the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar. Dominating the square is a 172-foot column, capped by a 17-foot statue of Admiral Horatio Nelson, the battle’s commander. Four bronze lions guard the base of the column, and the square is filled with statues of other military leaders. The National Gallery, Britain’s national art museum, overlooks Trafalgar Square from the north.
