Whitehall

Home to the governments administrative offices, Whitehall is a wide road between the Houses of Parliament and Trafalgar Square. (Trafalgar Square and its dominating Nelson's Column are visible at the back center of the photo above.) Located along Whitehall are the Admiralty (i.e., the Navy headquarters), the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Ministry of Defence, and the Treasury. The prime ministers residence is just off Whitehall, at 10 Downing Street. Named after a palace that burned down in 1698, Whitehall took its current form in the eighteenth century. The statue of the Duke of Cambridge, which Peter has just walked past, can be seen in the left foreground of the photo above.
