Mercantile house

Mercantile is another name for general store or dry grocer. Mr. Jonathan Stout is the store owner, and he is married to Mistress Emily (she was from a noble family, and married down.) They have eight children, and at the time of our story, another child is expected in a few months.

Their house is nicely furnished, with all the latest imported lace curtains and a properly furnished parlor complete with a piano and harp.
