Beneath the glass case lies an original copy of Shakespeare's First Folio, an amazing and rare treasure. Nobody but the head librarian has access to open the case and handle this amazing book, although there is a legend that there is another hidden key somewhere within the Shakesepare Learning Library. Maybe you could find it!
A plate on the outside of the case reads:
"The First Folio, edited by Shakespeare's fellow actors John Heminge and Henry Condell, was the first collected edition of Shakespeare's plays; its printing in 1623, some seven years after Shakespeare's death, was a massive undertaking: it included thirty-six plays, eighteen of which had never been published before. Even now, though, there are at least two possible Shakespearean plays for which no known copy exists today: Love's Labour's Won and Cardenio.
On the other hand, though, scholars now know of two Shakespearean plays not included in the first folio: Two Noble Kinsmen and Pericles, both plays known only through their quarto versions. (Both of these quartos are available in the Shakespeare Learning Library Rare Book Room.)"
